NIWA reviewed an assessment of environmental impacts of salmon farms at Te Pangu Bay, Tory Channel (U090841) and Clay Point, Tory Channel (U060926), prepared by the Cawthron Institute for The New Zealand King Salmon Co Ltd (NZKS), and proposed variations to the Environmental Quality Management System (EQMS) for the farms.
Periphyton samples were collected from two sites on Waianiwaniwa River upstream and downstream of the site of a proposed landfill, as part of an environmental assessment. Six - 10 quantitative samples were collected (rock scrapes) from each site on 1 December 1999, and analysed for biomass. Community composition was determined from a pooled sample of upstream and downstream locations at each site.
Water column monitoring at the end of Stage 1 for mussel farm MPE921 (Site 8572) in April and May 2011 estimated phytoplankton concentrations from fluorescence and chlorophyll a measurements.
Ten replicate quantitative periphyton samples were collected from three streams in the the Kirkliston Range (Waitaki catchment). One of the streams provided the domestic drinking water supply for Hakataramea. Available data are for 1998 and 1999.
