The location and extent of Benthic protection areas designated in the exclusive economic zone.
Chemical monitoring of sediments in estuaries within the Northland region for Northland Regional Council. Sampling sites are located in the Whangarei Harbour and Bay of Islands, and include tidal creeks, mid-channel and open water locations. Sampling frequency = 2yearly (autumn). Sampling began in 2010 and is ongoing (at 2-yearly intervals). Number of sites = 32 total. Extent of site = 1800m2 (60m x 30m). Number of replicates = 5 per site. Measured variables = Sediment characteristics (grain size, TOC, TP, nitrogen, lead, zinc and copper). Sampling protocol & QA = Internal protocol and QA procedures. Sediment analysis external (Malvern Particle Analyser).
Public presentation describing the context of the Bay of Islands Oceans Survey 20/20 project and the outline for the public presentation days. This presentation was given in the Bay of Islands, 13-14 July 2010.
Baited Underwater Video (BUV) footage was taken at offshore reef sites during the July survey by RV Tangaroa. Each deployment was about 30 minutes long.
Mesozooplankton and macrozooplankton data were collected during the January-March 2008 NIWA IPY-CAML on RV Tangaroa. Eleven stations were sampled between latitude and longitude using the MOCNESS 200 microns codend and net sampled from the surface to the seafloor and 4-5 depth strata per station within the water column. The samples were split at sea with a plankton splitter for use in various analyses. For the biomass samples are size-fractionated using a series of sieves (200, 500, 1000 micron). Other samples were preserved and counts made of all identified taxa. The spreadsheet gives mesoplankton biomass (in 3 size classes), copepod species composition in the surface layer only. Macroplankton species composition is given for all depths where they were collected. Mesoplankton group composition is coloured green on the spreadsheet.
Chemical monitoring of sediments in estuaries within the Waikato region for Waikato Regional Council. Sampling sites are located in the Firth of Thames, Whaingaroa (Raglan ) Harbour, Port Waikato, Aotea Harbour, Kawhia Harbour and Tairua Harbour. Sampling frequency = every 5 years. Sampling began in 2003 (not at all sites) and is ongoing, but irregular. Number of sites = 103 total; 10 sites have been monitored twice, and 93 sites sampled once so far. Extent of site = 10,000m2 (100m x 100m). Number of replicates = 12 per site. Measured variables = Sediment characteristics (cadmium, nickel, lead, zinc, chromium, copper, arsenic, organics, antimony, mercury and silver). Sampling protocol & QA = Internal sampling protocol. All analysis on the sediment samples was undertaken on the sub-2mm fraction of the sediments and was conducted by Hills Laboratories
Water quality monitoring of coastal waters within the Bay of Plenty region for Environment Bay of Plenty. Sampling sites are representative of harbours and estuaries throughout the region. Sampling frequency = 2monthly. Sampling began in 1990 and is ongoing. Number of sites = 30 total (27 high tide sites of which 21 are current and 3 low tide sites). Number of replicates = 1 per site. Measured variables = Water quality: salinity, conductivity, DO%, DOmg/l, temp, PH, E coli, Enterococci, faecal coliforms, TP, DRP, TN, NNN, NH4, Chlorophyll a, turbidity, suspended solids and black disc. Sampling protocol & QA = Internal sampling protocol using MoH/MfE Guidelines
Physical, chemical and biological monitoring of water quality in estuaries within the Northland region for Northland Regional Council. Sampling sites are currently located in the Whangarei Harbour (WH), Bay of Islands (BOI) and Kaipara Harbour (KH), past data includes Hokianaga and Whangaroa Harours. Sampling frequency = 2monthly + 3 event driven sampling each year following heavy rainfall (WH, BOI), monthly (KH). Sampling began in 1986 (WH, BOI) and 2009 (KH) and is ongoing. Number of sites = 41 total currently. Since the start of the programme some sites have been dropped and some new sites have been added. Number of replicates = 1 per site. Measured variables = Water quality: salinity, DO%, DOmg/l, temp (YSI meter), Enterococci, faecal coliforms (Internal lab), TP, DRP, NNN, NH4, Turbidity (External lab), secchi, water depth (recorded in field). Sampling protocol & QA = Internal field monitoring manual and QA procedures. Water samples taken from top 0.5m of water column and sampling conducted at random tidal states, giving a more representative picture of water quality over time (WH, BIO) or high water (KH).
NZOI (the New Zealand Oceanographic Institute of the DSIR) maintained register books for all stations occupied at sea. Each register was labelled by a letter and this letter was the prefix for each station. So the "A" register would have stations A1, A2, A3, ... etc. For each station, the details that could be recorded include: date, time, latitude/longitude, depth, sample gear, and brief description of the station and/or sample. These registers have been scanned to a PDF document for easier access and safe keeping.
NIWA IPY-CAML station data collected (including dates, times, positions, depths, and methods) during the January-March 2008 R.V. Tangaroa voyage to the Ross Sea (csv format).
