Natural environmental hazard mitigations project using RiskScape
The objectives of this project are to provide an evidence base on both the potential benefits from investment in increased natural hazard risk reduction measures, and relative impact of various risk reduction measures. The work programme identified by the Ministry for the Environment (MfE) has two stages to meet these objectives.
Project Stage 1 identifies natural hazard impact and risk modelling research that could potentially be employed to develop case studies that address the project objectives. From these potential studies NIWA and GNS Science, in conjunction with MfE selected particular case studies for implementation in Project Stage 2. This report addresses Project Stage 1.
The RiskScape team reviewed this existing information and developed a framework for Stage 2 that incorporates the existing external national hazard information available alongside the existing and relevant risk analysis data available to RiskScape for comparing risk reduction strategies in locations across New Zealand.
In order to provide MfE with a clear idea of what is and is not possible in Stage 2, the RiskScape team at both NIWA and GNS Science have together identified possible case studies that can be used given the current data availability and RiskScape functions.
