Statement

General FMA’s

Legal definitions of the boundaries of the general Fisheries Management Areas are contained within the first schedule of the Fisheries Act, 1996. Legal definitions of the FMA boundaries are dependent on legally authoritative layers depicting the EEZ boundary and mean high water mark.

Some coordinates that lie on the EEZ are not depicted as such because of the nature of the EEZ being created from base points by LINZ (Land information New Zealand – see Note below). Where this occurred at the line of latitude or longitude

representing the FMA was either shortened or lengthened in the same direction of latitude or longitude to intersect with the EEZ.

Note

Coastal boundaries are defined by the LINZ (Land Information New Zealand) NZMS 250,000 series topographic maps. The layer describes the extent of the landmass of New Zealand and offshore islands to the mean high water mark. This layer was

extracted from the LINZ digital topographic data originally created for the NZMS 260 1:50,000 map series. Critchlow obtains the latest version of the LINZ Topographic Database (used to create the LINZ 1:50,000 topographic printed maps) on a regular basis. For these layers, LINZ maintains object coverage, consistency and naming.

The names on the islands are a combination of the topographic data set and a spatial join with New Zealand Place Names dataset and the null data. The geometries have been combined where like name exists to reduce the number of

features.

The land has been generalised for viewing above 100km using the following constraints:

Node Thinning/Generalisation:

3-Node Collinear Deviation:0.2km

Node Separation: 1km

(Which means there are only 3 nodes per 1km and linear

deviation of more then 0.2km is smoothed.)

All islands under 0.5km are removed.

The boundary of New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is defined in the Territorial Sea Contiguous Zone and Exclusive Economic Zone Act, 1997. The legally authoritative map of New Zealand’s EEZ is held by Land Information New

Zealand (LINZ) in their map library. The EEZ presented here has been determined from the legislation defining the extent of the EEZ and created using GIS software utilising base-point data supplied by LINZ. These base-points describe surveyed

locations around the coastline of New Zealand. This information layer is considered reasonably accurate but not legally authoritative. Shared boundaries are provisional only, and remain subject to delimitation.
